This paper examines the role of social capital in the adjustment of Russian rural households to exigencies created by the introduction of market reforms in the post-Soviet period. Using data from three joint Russian-American surveys in rural villages in 1991, 1993, and 1995, the researchers explore the overall adjustment of villages to these changes, as well as, differences between households with respect to economic success and symptoms of stress. The findings show that although there has been a much better adjustment to change than many other observers have suggested, there are substantial differences between households with respect to economic and psychological adjustment. Both the overall growth of peasant household production and differences between households in economic and psychological adjustment are explained in terms of different types of social capital.
